Indiana Biography Index
(Materials published after 1990)
This is an online version of the Indiana Biography Index, which indexes select books and periodicals published in or after 1990 with information about people with strong connections to Indiana.
The types of books and periodicals selected are those that the librarians in the Indiana Division have found useful in locating biographical information, as well as Indiana-related periodicals that are not indexed by other sources. Newspaper articles are not included in the Indiana Biography Index.
Each entry includes a first and last name, dates of birth and death (if available), and basic information about the source. This includes title of the book or periodical, title of the article, author, publisher, date of publication, and call number for the book in the Indiana State Library.
The online version does not include the card file version of the Indiana Biography Index, which includes over 200,000 entries and is available for use in the Great Hall of the Indiana State Library. An online version of that card file index is available.
Almost 40,000 entries are currently available in the Indiana Biography Index. More books and periodicals are indexed each month.
The Indiana State Library makes no claims as to the validity or accuracy of the information found through using the Indiana Biography Index.
General Searching Instructions
You may use keyword searching in the Indiana Biography Index to locate a person by their first or last name. We suggest you enter both a first and last name, as simply entering Smith or John will retrieve more results than are easily sorted. Do not use AND to link your search terms; bobby knight will find all entries with both bobby and knight in the entry.
The index will retrieve all entries that include the words you have submitted. The software used lists the entries in rough alphabetical order, then in the order the entries were input into the database.
When you are finished typing the name, be sure to click on the "Start Search" button. If you do not, you will receive an error message.Obtaining Copies
Once you have a citation, you can locate the articles in the newspaper. The Indiana State Library's Newspaper Collection has all of the necessary issues available on microfilm, for use within the library or available via interlibrary loan through your local library.
If there is a full citation (name of paper, date of paper, page, and column number), you may also request a photocopy of the article through our Ask a Librarian service. You may view our current photocopy cost list to determine the charges for your photocopies. Please allow ten working days for response requests.
